Romans 8:15 (NIV) …the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”
It is a sad truth that in this day and age many of us have been brought up with the absence of a good father figure or at least know someone who has. It is also true that most of us can see or have been told of some similarity between ourselves and our fathers, “you have your dad’s nose” or “you have a temper like your dad”, for example.
A person’s identity is founded in their heritage; who their parents and family are, what they look like, where they come from, etc. But if a parent isn’t known or hasn’t had a positive input into the life of their child, that child can be left with a negative self image and a sense of helplessness to change.
As Christians we are regularly challenged on areas of our character, behaviour and thinking. [It can be daunting to realign ourselves away from the ways we learnt in the world to God’s Word which can make Him feel distant at times]. We know God is our Lord and rules over us but in light of our failings against His perfection it can be very easy to see God as some sort of senior authority over us like a headmaster or a CEO high above us in His plush office on the top floor.
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God…The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, Romans 8:14 – 16 (NKJV).
As our loving Father, we are received not just as His people, or His friends but His children. That means if you walk by faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, God is your Father. He will nurture you and raise you in His likeness, imparting in you His wisdom, teaching you His ways that you will grow for His glory. Unlike our earthly fathers our heavenly Father is perfect and His word says that we are made in His image (Gen 1:27).
So regardless of where you are from, your family background, etc, if you have accepted Christ as your Lord and Saviour you have been adopted into the greatest family and your real identity can now be founded in your Father in heaven, amen.
