Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
John 12:3 (KJV)
Mary’s act shows us two important things that are required when it comes to praising God; a humble heart and a grateful heart.
“And anointed the feet of Jesus” . Mary’s deliberate act in lowering herself to anoint Jesus’ feet could only possibly mean one thing; humility. When you bend to touch someone’s feet it means you are at that person’s mercy, however, you are down there because you are going down low (as low as the ground) to touch that person’s feet.
“Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly,” this act shows gratitude.
When Mary went to meet with the Lord Jesus Christ, she went all-out in praising Him but with a humble and grateful heart. In other words, she offered her worship with all her heart and as Children of God every chance to praise Him is to go all-out with a humble but grateful heart because God has done so much for us (Romans 5:8) and He deserves our all as well as just our best.
