But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
Gen 2:17 (KJV)
To control is to have in check, to dominate, to govern. It paints a picture of a force or authority being in charge or ultimate power over someone or something. As human beings we always want to be in control at home, our place of work among friends or in life in general. Being in control gives us the chance to change things the way we want it to be, to move or even have the power to stop things the way we want it, when, where and how we want to it. Ultimate control!
And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
Gen 1:28 (KJV)
This need and longing to be in control is a God given privilege. The account of the creation of the world tells us of how God made man and put man in control (the power we long for) over everything that God created. But the right to ultimate control was reserved to God and God alone (Gen 2:17).God relinquishing ultimate control to man is like putting a child behind the wheels of a massive truck to control it.
So what is this ultimate control that God has reserved to Himself? …our soul.
What God was indirectly saying to Adam was, I made you so don’t think you can do whatever you want with the life I’ve given to you. I have put a limitation to your “freewill” and as long want you to continue to enjoy and be in control, obey my command.
“Freewill” or the word it is “my life” is what has made this world the way it is today. God wants us to surrender our will to Him because He knows and has the ULTIMATE control over life. The question is will you let Him take control of your life?
