POEM: Friends Of Mine | by Lavinia

This is the story of 3 friends of mine
Tenacious, Intelligent & Loud.
The things we used to do together
And the things they’re up to now.

Loud, well she’s very out there
She’s confident and sure.
But I think to an extent it’s a guise to hide
Her many insecurities, her failures, her flaws.

Loud say’s “Here I am, take it or leave it!”
“Get with the program or get gone!”
But I think she built it up as a defence mechanism
So by the negative words of other’s she wouldn’t get stung.

You see, from a child she’s been picked on for certain physicality’s
But, at the same time, highly praised for certain abilities & qualities.
So somewhere along the line I think her perspective of self got skewed.
Her vocab got rude, her outlook was gloom.
Her confidence became aggressive, her bubbliness excessive.
All combined, this ‘I don’t give two hoots’ loudness ensued.

Well, Loud, she was a right one back in the day.
Woe to those who’d dare cross her or get in her way.
Regardless of race, sex or size, time or place.
She would cuss anybody, putting them in their place.
She’d enter a room and instantly make her presence known.
On the top of her voice, like a foghorn being blown.
Cracking a joke or two hoping to impress those that spectate.
Spouting some foolishness mixed with obscenity aiming to captivate.

Boy, sometimes I felt embarrassed for her!
But then Loud got saved, amen.

She began to realise that God made her in a particular way.
She’s now trying to focus on the positives and apply them for God’s glory.
She’s friendly, she’s bubbly, she’s funny & confident.
Everywhere she goes people like her, there are few that don’t.
Yes, she’s loud, but that’s ok, at least you can hear her.
And, yes, sometimes she’s cheeky but always with laughter.
I’m sure as she continues in Christ her character will continue to positively grow.
After all God named her Loud for a reason and in time that reason will show.

My friend, Intelligent…well she’s intelligent!
She has a higher than average IQ.
Good comprehension, analytical, logical.
And she can speak some good sense too.

All of our friends turn to her for advice.
A word of wisdom in a time of need.
A big problem with Intelligent though is
Her own advice she very rarely heeds.

You see, as a child she was picked on for being clever in class.
But yet those same kids would come to her for help on mass.
So somewhere along the line I think her perspective of self got skewed.
For a while she stopped trying in school, and acted the fool.
But then her intelligence became arrogant, and need to strive irrelevant.
All combined, this ‘do as I say, not as I do’ false sense of intelligence ensued.

When I look back, she passed all her exams and was top of everything.
Without even revising, researching or studying.
She was looked up to by her peers for the clever things she’d say.
Although sometimes she had no idea what she was on about, but made it sound good anyway.
Developing a false sense of security in the intelligence she had.
Confused by an active imagination and over thinking, driving herself mad.
As a result she made a lot of mistakes, filled with fear, unable to make clear decisions.
Often throwing all logic out of the window, relying on this false intelligence to get her out of situations.

Boy, what a paradox!
But then Intelligent got saved, amen.

She began to realise that God gave her something not to throw away.
She’s now trying to focus on the positives and apply them for God’s glory.
The ability to comprehend, reason and speak words or wisdom is something not to take light.
Being able to advise and encourage, so long as the words spoken are Godly and right.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
She no longer needs to be confused by options and possibilities but just stay faithful to God’s planning.
I’m sure as she continues in Christ her character will continue to positively grow.
After all God named her Intelligent for a reason and in time that reason will show.

Now my friend, Tenacious, she’s just different.
For a time she considered herself a man.
If inspired she’s very determined & driven.
She most definitely will, because she can.

Tenacious likes to get things done quickly & precisely
No point in going round the houses, the quickest route is A to B.
Tenacious is extremely impatient.
And won’t hesitate to make her frustration’s known if needs be.

You see, she was brought up hearing “if you want anything done, you’ve got to do it yourself”
And life’s difficulties and disappointments made it hard for her to rely on anyone else.
So somewhere along the line I think her perspective of self got skewed.
Her stubbornness grew she was obstinate too.
Proudly independent, intolerant and impatient.
All combined, this ‘I don’t need know one for nothing’ tenacity ensued.

The world taught Tenacious to be similar to a man.
In terms of hunting, gathering, providing, deciding and just doing everything she possibly can.
Because she led she felt she could compensate for a man who couldn’t.
Not realising the frustration she’d feel when needing to be led by a man who wouldn’t.
She was very independent, what she wanted she’d work hard to get.
But often with no real purpose, just to proudly prove she could I’d bet.
She would press headstrong into projects often involving others.
But give up in frustration, impatient when those others weren’t as on it or didn’t get it, she’d say ‘I can’t be bothered’.

Boy, oh boy!
But then Tenacious got saved, amen.

She began to realise, through prayer & her pastor, that God made her in a particular way.
She’s now trying to focus on the positives and apply them for God’s glory.
For a while she misunderstood herself and considered her tenacity a manly trait to be denied.
But she’s now growing to understand that she just needs to curve a bit instead of always going for the straight line.
The determination and drive she has can certainly be used for God’s purpose.
With the application of patience and tolerance, the possibilities are endless.
I’m sure as she continues in Christ her character will continue to positively grow.
After all God named her Tenacious for a reason and in time that reason will show.
